\documentclass{chowto} \title{How to set the SOS magnets} \howtotype{user} % ``expert'', ``user'', ``reference'' %\experiment{Name of experiment} % Optional \author{Nadia Fomin} \category{magnet} % Subject area of this document %\maintainer{Name of person maintaining document} % Optional \date{\today} % Can use \today as the argument \begin{document} \begin{abstract} This will describe how to set the SOS magnets by momentum. \end{abstract} \section{Getting Started} First, you will need the SOS magnet controls. From a terminal, type "telnet vmec19" and use "cvxwrks" as the login and the password can be found written somewhere around the slow controls computer. Once you log in, type "SOS" and press "ENTER". A menu should appear. Now, you're ready to set the magnets \section{Degaussing} You should degauss the magnets if you're changing the polarity or if the "degauss needed" fields say "yes." To degauss the magnets, select either "degauss(electrons)", item 13 on the menu, if you want negative polarity or "degauss(protons)", item 12 on the menu, if you want positive polarity. The magnet status field will indicate when the degaussing process is complete. \section{Setting the Magnets} Magnets will be turned on one at a time, but the order is not important. First, choose "select power supply", item 1 on the menu. Choose 1, 2 or 3 and press enter. Next, select "turn power supply on", item 2 on the menu, This will turn on the magnet you just selected. Repeat for the other magnets. To select positive polarity, select option 5 from the menu, or option 6 for negative polarity. If this happens too soon after the power supplies are turned on, you will receive a message instructing you to wait some number of seconds. Once they're all on, select "set by momentum", item 9 on the menu, and enter the appropriate momentum. Make sure to include the minus sign if you're setting the magnets to negative polarity. You will see the magnets ramping in the status field. \end{document} % Revision history: % $Log: set_sos_magnets.tex,v $ % Revision 1.1 2004/09/18 19:35:08 saw % Initial version % % Revision 1.1 2003/03/07 21:50:38 saw % Initial Checkin %
