don't forget that you can use N random peaks to minimize the statistical fluctuations in your estimate of the random background. for large N, you can reduce the statistical fluctuations in the final subtracted yield near the endpoint by as much as sqrt(2). these N random peaks should be minimally contaminated with pion and proton feedthru.
unfortunately this technique doesn't apply to the reals peak ... there's only one of those!
