When informed of the backgrounds mcc didn't panic (unlike us). They steered on the dump using upstream correctors and things now look much better. Since I hadn't seen the beautiful harp scan taken at 04:12 in hclog 2300 my kneejerk response was "residual dispersion" but they evidently had good beam after about 7 hours of tuning last nite.
