Notice

You must establish the root cause of the shunt breaker trip before attempting a reset.

Interlocks from the following list must be handled by experts only. If the interlock is on this list do NOT attempt a manual reset.

  • Engagement of limit switches (fwd, rev and separation)
  • PLC faults and/or I/O chassis hang ups.
  • Complete power outage to Rotation rack, (also requires re-entering spectrometers angles into the controls program).
  • V/F motor drive controller faulting due to radiation or memory loss
  • Electric motor and/or brake failure.

If the fault is NOT on the above list then it is likely due to brown-out events on the 120Vac line to the shunt trip breaker due to the HMS UPS not operating properly (replacement is on order). This condition can be reset by approved personnel after verifying that no other faults exist, and have permission from a Hall C Engineer or the Hall Leader.

Spectrometer Rotation Reset Procedure

This is how to reset the spectrometer rotation controls.

You *must* have explicit permission from Steve Lassiter and/or the Hall Leader to do this operation.
No exceptions!
Appropriate precautions and PPE must be used when flipping breakers.

Locate the HMS rotation control box on the beam-right side of the HMS carriage over the rail

HMS Rotation Control Box HMS Rotation Control Box

Disable the rotation control by turning the key from 'Normal' to 'Bypass'

HMS Rotation Control Key in 'Bypass'

Locate the HMS breaker panel (to the left of the rotation control panel) on the HMS carriage

HMS Rotation Breaker Panel

Turn the breaker labeled 'HMS Drive' (22) OFF, then back ON

HMS Rotation Breaker

Locate the SHMS rotation control box at the rear of the SHMS carriage between the wheels

Note: be careful of the angle camera nearby!

SHMS Rotation Control Box

Disable the rotation control by turning the key from 'Normal' to 'Bypass'

SHMS Rotation Control Key in 'Bypass'

Locate the SHMS breaker panel (on the beam-left side of the carriage, under the upper platform, downstream of the stairway).

SHMS Rotation Breaker Panel

Turn the breaker labeled 'DRIVE MOTOR/SHUNT TRIP' (39) OFF, then back ON

SHMS Rotation Breaker

Call the Counting House and ask the shift crew to reset the rotation controls for both spectrometers.

After pushing "Reset", the "Drive Controller" indicators should go normal (i.e. from red to clear).

The "Shunt trip switch" will remain red while the keys are in "Bypass" mode.

Re-enable the remote rotation controls in both the SHMS and HMS by turning their keys back to 'Normal'

SHMS: SHMS Rotation Control Key in 'Normal' HMS: SHMS Rotation Control Key in 'Normal'

Call the Counting House and ask for them to try rotating the problematic arm(s). If it works, go back upstairs.
