Setting up NPS sweeper and correctors

  • Whenever setting the SHMS/NPS to an angle/setting that has not been used before (at the present energy/pass), a procedure must be followed to ensure that the correctors are set the correct value to compensate for the stray field from the NPS sweeper
  • When first getting ready to turn on the sweeper at a new setting, call MCC and request that they execute the NPS sweeper setup procedure
  • The MCC procedure (still in draft form) can be found here: [1]
  • As part of the procedure, MCC will ask for the predicted currents for the correctors. Those values can be found here: [2]
  • The general steps of the procedure are:
    • Steer the beam to the dump with the NPS sweeper off - observe on the dump viewer
    • Ramp the sweeper in steps and check for movement at the dump
    • If the sweeper does move the beam, add current to the correctors in steps
    • Empirically determine the final corrector settings with the NPS sweeper at full current
