Meeting Minutes
2015-05-01 Proposal Meeting Minutes
- Discussed update T20 statistics with the (correct) inclusion of the elastic peak
- Patricia raised a concern on QE x=2 scattering from nitrogen as a background
- Ellie will look into it
- Karl brought up that the elastic peak should have a width on the order of the spectrometer resolution
- Ellie will smear the delta function appropriately
- Mentioned that calculations are at 90 nA, it was suggested to reduce that to 80 nA
- Ellie will reach out to theorists who weren't on the call
2015-04-24 Proposal Meeting Minutes
- Weekly meetings will be scheduled from now until proposal submission
- Wim is expected to have FSI calculations for us within a week
- It sounds like we might not have calculations from Wally in time for submission
- However, we could get a statement from him saying that the calculations are in progress and that the measurements are important
- Dustin has written a very nice document on systematic effects from a tensor target, which he is turning into a tech note
- We'll be drawing from and referring to the tech note to address the PAC42 concerns on systematics
- Ellie is in the process of adding her work with T20 into the proposal
- Lowest Q^2 point as a calibration, largest Q^2 range of any T20 measurement, highest Q^2 T20 point, and mid point where discrepancy between Hall A/C data exists
2015-03-27 Proposal Meeting Minutes
- Theory
- Recent discussion with Gerry was that we need to push to higher nu
- Mark's bigger concern is W_NN, which has been checked
- Rates calculated at 11 GeV beam to push up nu slightly, giving us our best estimate for what we can experimentally do
- Wally Van Orden has begun low Q2 Azz calculations
- Doug will inquire as to his timeline
- Still waiting on Wim's FSI results
- Systematics
- Smallest measurement of Azz expected is ~1E-2, which is an order of magnitude larger than beam systematic effects
- t20
- Ellie began looking at t20 rates from existing calculations. Preliminary results shown, but are expected to be an over-estimate.
- Proposal Suggestions
- Address that small Azz measurements are brand new, and have never been experimentally measured
- Answer the Big Question: "What is interesting about this observable? What's the underlying physics that makes it worth investigating?"
2015-02-26 Proposal Meeting Minutes
- Theory
- Jerry has been thinking a lot about the measurement and reiterated the importance of a good theoretical understanding
- Need to make sure that theory curves make sense within the kinematic range we're looking at (Mark is arguing that it does, and LC should be good for Q^2>1 GeV^2)
- It would be beneficial to have a kinematic point overlapping with past QE data
- Ellie will look into whether this exists and see what she finds
- <math>D(\gamma, \gamma'X)</math>
- DNP targets have been limited to steer away from photon beams, but with WACS leading the way this may be an option
- Pure photon beam would increase luminosity, but is limited by dumping the electron beam in the hall and needing to understand backgrounds
- With a radiated photon beam, we don't know it's energy without getting all (or at least the vast majority) of final state particles
- Once again, 300 MeV/c is a very interesting point
- Mark will send link to reference in '88 Phys Rept. looking at potential with photon beams
- Systematics and Polarization
- Dustin still working on writing section on systematics
- Checking polarization against low Q^2 t20 is looking like it could be important for having an excellent grasp on tensor polarization enhancement
- Even if we don't enhance tensor polarization, still possibility for Azz measurement
- Ellie will verify this
- Rates
- b1 rates code included DIS, last year's Azz code included QE, Ellie needs to include elastic if we're looking at parasitic t20 measurements
- Ellie is working on including deuteron form factor (A,B) parameterization into code
- Future meetings
- For those at Nuclear Physics with Spectator Tagging Workshop @ ODU, there will be an Azz lunch meeting on Monday, March 9
- Next phone meeting: Thursday, Feb. 19 at 11am Eastern Time
2015-01-29 Proposal Meeting Minutes
- Overview of Azz and TAC/PAC reports
- Azz measured at JLab at x=2 (as t20) a long time ago
- Can do a benchmark measurement and map out t20 very easily at low Q2
- Very powerful for understanding target polarization
- Need to make more explicit how to measure and compare to previous NIKHEF measurements (Ellie & Doug)
- Doug will start pulling up old NIKHEF t20 information
- Open Question: Can we do an online analysis of tensor polarization using t20?
- Aim for 300 MeV/c, where wavefunctions diverge
- Two important things emerge here: Wave function differences and relativistic effects
- Final state interactions
- Wim still has to look into it, is expecting results by April (Not before Easter)
- DVCS in deuteron: Can this be done with Azz? This will be addressed (to Simonetta) in detail later
- PAC43 submission deadline is May 18
- Look up comparison of cross-sections used in rates against actual data, send link to Donal
- Three big issues to address for PAC43:
- Theory
- Systematics
- Dilution may be the most important
- Dustin has a good idea to enhance the description of controlling systematics, and will look into it for the next meeting
- Polarization
- Next meeting: Feb. 26, 11am
2014-05-16 Proposal Meeting Minutes
- Ellie showed what different polarizations and an extended target have on the statistics
- We'll stick with Pzz=30% for the proposal, since that's the requirement for b1, but we have the others on hand if we need them
- Dustin is playing with tensor-polarized butanol, since it's easier to use than ND3, but gives an idea of what can be done with ND3
- A discussion was had on what we can do with the slopes
- Ellie will find the confidence level we have in each slope at different Q^2
- There are scaling variables where the slopes all sit on top of each other
- Seeing this happen for different Q^2 will show that we have a good understanding of what is happening with SRC theory
- Multiple talks were had with theorists
- Ellie talked with Mark Strikman, who will be writing a motivation section for separation of the S- and D-states using Azz
- Ellie and Doug talked with Misak Sargsian, who will be doing light-cone and virtual nucleon calculations at each of our kinematics
- Doug talked with Wally Van Orden, who is very excited about the low-Q^2 parts, but we're not sure if he'll have something compelling before the written proposal due date
- It is expected that he should have something by the PAC defense
- Ellie will reach out to the other theorists who attended the Tensor Workshop to see if there are any other physics that we can pull out of the measurement
- Proposal Status
- Not much of an update, expecting a big one by next week as we hear back from the theorists
- Next meeting: Friday the 23rd at 3pm ET
2014-05-09 Proposal Meeting Minutes
- Need input from theorists
- On Thursday, Ellie, Doug, and Patricia? will have a meeting with Misak (SRC Group)
- Phone call will happen sometime Thursday, after Misak arrives at JLab
- Ask if he could write a section
- Ellie will get in touch with Mark about his work (S/D Group)
- Ask if he could write a section
- Mark, Ellie, and Donal will see how different wavefunctions affect Azz
- We need to be careful about what we call "short range"
- Short Range Correlations = Tensor Correlations
- Short Range NN Core = Repulsive NN Core
- Azz bridges the gap between t20 and b1
- b1 for x < 0.6, Azz for 0.6 < x < 2, t20 for 2 < x
- Dustin will help with systematics and updating the target section with a conservative "what we can do tomorrow" piece and an optimistic "what can we do 5 years from now if everything works" piece
- Ellie will double-check the statistics for Pzz=15% at 30 days of beam
- Karl will look into luminosity monitors
2014-04-18 Proposal Meeting Minutes
- Ellie showed the kinematics for 5 potential measurements in 24 PAC days
- For the PAC, it will be important not only to see what we can do with Pzz=30%, but also for Pzz=15%
- One thing that Doug and Patricia noted is that it probably makes more sense to really nail the plateau at Q^2~1.5, without question, and have that be our high-Q^2 point
- The lower Q^2 points are cheap compared to the high one
- Ellie will play with the kinematics a bit to find our plateau sweet spot
- The x>2 region is going to be important for getting a handle on the dilution, even though it's unphysical for the deuteron
- Doug is going to talk to Brad Sawatzky about getting us a JLab git repository
- The PAC42 submission deadline is June 2
- The joint Hall A/C meeting is on June 5-6, following the User's Group Meeting
- Ellie will contact Pete Markowitz about our intent to submit a proposal
- Putting together the proposal
- We are ahead of the game on kinematics, but need theory motivation for the experiment
- The talks from the Tensor Workshop need to be combed through for the interesting physics
- Karl and Ellie will go back through the talks to pull out interesting motivations
- Wally's talk will be useful for the low Q^2 points
- Misak's and Mark's talks will be useful for the high Q^2 point
- Doug, Karl, and Patricia are interested in moving forward, but we need to reach out to pick up more collaborators
- Next meeting in 1-2 weeks, depending on progress
- Fridays at 3:00pm is a good time for everyone
