Radiation budget

Since this experiment has almost the same geometry as HNSS, a scaled up radiation budget was prepared from measured values of HNSS by RADCON group (figure 75). However, due to the luminosity which is expected to be 400 times higher than in the case of E89-009, such a simple scale up might not be accurate enough.

For this experiment (same as HNSS), the direct bremsstrahlung from target is aiming directly to the main dump. However, the scattered electrons with energy less than the initial beam energy will all be swept by the Splitter field and hit materials around the target chamber, magnet irons, shielding materials, or the hall space. This is the main source of the radiation budget. To ensure a more accurate estimate and control, the RADCON group is setting up a more detailed simulation to evaluate this budget as the realistic engineering design around the target becomes available. Two ways of control for the radiation budget are considered if the budget needs to be reduced. One is modification of the dump line shape or size to optimize the beam delivery. The second is to add additional shielding at the proper location. The collaboration could use such a simulation also to evaluate the physics background.
